Remembering My Grandpa

Not many people know this, but when I was growing up we lived with my grandparents at 700 S. Marshall Street in Lakewood. We spent all of my elementary school years either living with them, next door to them or a few blocks away from them. I can't think many childhood memory that didn't have something to do with my grandparents.

On December 12, 2011 we gathered as a family and remembered my grandpa who passed away just a few days before his 85th birthday. While I have many, many favorite memories of him two of my most favorite are....

In the 1980's my grandpa had a working garage (at 700 S. Marshall Street). Not one where you store your cars so they don't get snowy in the winter...one that has tools, wood planes, hammers, nails, scrap wood and a wood burning stove. I remember Sara and I going out to visit grandpa in the garage on snowy days and asking him if we could "build something". We each had our own tool boxes and grandpa gave us scraps of wood and bent nails to "build something". I so fondly remember the fun we had building with scraps and smelling the sweet smell of sawdust and a wood burning stove. I miss his just reminiscing.

One of my most favorite recent memories of my grandpa is when Davis and I went out to visit my grandparents a few years ago. The memory is short and simple. It has been a while since we visited them and when we left my grandpa said "Next time, don't make it so long until you come back." My grandpa was a man of few words and none were ever spoken of love. So, when I heard him say those words, what I really heard was "I missed you. Come back soon. I love you."

Here are the details from the day of his service and his obituary:

Morris "Bob" Greene, 84 passed away on December 2, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. He was born on December 10, 1926 in Imogine, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Hattie; son Warren; daughters Deborah, Gail and Wanda; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Harvey.
He served in the Army post- World War II and later became a carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, Bluegrass and RV'ing.

My mom and uncle gave a great eulogy and in it they spoke about my grandpa's character. He was a man of integrity and did things the right way becasue it was the RIGHT thing to do. I realize now what an influence his character had on my mom and I see the same characteristics in her and now my sister and I. He was a good man and will be missed but he lives on in our sweet, sweet memories.

Here are photos of the memory boards I made for the service.
