2+ Gifts (Mother's Day 2010)

Our Mother's Day celebration this year was at our house (like last year) and we did an ASAP party (like last year)...As Simple As Possible. Someone brings soda, another person salad, another dessert. We provide the pizza and the patio. After all, no mom should have to work at a party on HER day.

While every Mother's Day is special, this year was particularly special because of two gifts. The best gifts really are the ones from the heart. The first "best" gift I got was waiting for me when I opened my mailbox that Sunday morning (I never check my mail, that's why it was there on Sunday). Sitting atop all the junk was a card from my daddy. Not my step-dad, not my father-in-law, my daddy. The person I hadn't been in contact with for over 10 years. And, while this isn't the first correspondence we've had since our "hiatus" it's one of the ones that has meant the most. It was a card with a drawing of a little girl that looked like me when I was younger. Inside the card were some wonderful words and even more wonderful were the photos. Ah, that's how I remember him, but we are much older now. And, I hope, more forgiving and loving.

The second "best" gift was from Davis. The gift? A stepping stone that Davis made with my mom. The stone is made of concrete and has "MOM 2010" stamped in it. It has moons and stars (his favorite) and faint hand prints from where my mom tried her best to get him to do it. But, the real reason this gift is so dear to me is because it's not just a gift from Davis. It's from my mom, too. The love and patience she gave Davis while making the stepping stone is a symbol. A symbol of my mom's love for me, and the love she has for Davis. Some day Davis will look back at this stone (or the stones I hope my mom keeps making with him for me for Mother's Day) and he'll remember his childhood with his grandma and the memories they made together. That's as much a gift for my mom as it is for me.

Just when you think this post is the sappiest of them yet, STOP yourself! Let me remind you that the GUCCI bag I got in Nassau was for Mother's Day (from Eric, to me) and I also got gift card from The May family which I promptly spent shopping at Aveda to pamper myself!

"The" stepping stone. I hope the first of many (hint!)
